Nelson Pinot Noir 2006Te Mānia
Nelson Pinot Noir 2010

Te Mania Pinot Noir is made in an elegant appealing style which can be enjoyed when young but will also benefit from a little cellaring allowing it to develop more complex characters.

Nose:  Lovely lifted nose with red cherry and mocha notes combined with savoury, spicy aromas.

Palate:  Full fruit flavours of red cherries and raspberries.  Savoury, gamey flavours with hints of leather balanced with elegant tannins add complexity to this wine which delivers a long elegant finish.  This wine will continue to develop complexity over the next couple of years.

Vintage:  A range of Pinot Noir clones were hand harvested from 3 different vineyards.  The grapes were crushed and put into open tanks and fermented naturally with wild yeasts.  The fermenting wine and skins were hand plunged for 8-10 days. After ferment the wine was left on skins for 12 to 18 days before being pressed, settled and racked to tank.  The wine was then aged in French oak barrels for 11 months where the wine went through its secondary fermentation naturally in the spring as the temperature warmed.

Organic Status:  Certified Conversion Organic BioGro New Zealand.

Diet: Suitable for vegetarian diet.

Alcohol: 14%

Acidity: 4.8 g/L

Challenging the notion that the best reds come only from up north or down south, this pinot noir is a cheerleader for the Tasman Bay area. Vineyard owners Jon and Cheryl Harrey and winemaker Steve Gill have excelled themselves. We loved it. Ruby red in colour, the wine delivers plenty of red berry and spice flavours. It is exceptionally full-bodied, with great length: it’s smooth, with no tannins. Superb with summer BBQ fare, pasta and cheeses.

This vegetarian wine is garnet with flashes of red and terracotta. The aroma has some delightful spicy nutmeg, wood and herbal notes, combined with plums, old barrel notes and a dollop of mocha. The palate is crisp with some spicy fruit and very dark toasty notes, which are quite dominant. It is an unusual example on several fronts. Peter felt the wine was rich and layered and commented on some appealing allspice notes. There was plenty of length to the palate, some leafy bitterness towards the finish, which I found a little distracting from the mid-palate richness, and the aftertaste had staying power.

Even ruby-red colour with light garnet hues on rim.  This has a soft and gentle nose of red berry fruits, strawberries and cherries, along with nuts, cedary spices and a hint of milk chocolate.   Medium-full bodied, this is well-weighted with density and mouthfeel.  The fruit is a little shy, with flavours of dark red berries and cherries, framed by fine, grainy tannin extraction through the palate.  The acidity is balanced and the wine has vitality.  Oak spices emerge and combine with the red fruits on a soft, moderately sustained finish.  This is a full and textured Pinot Noir with restrained spiced red fruits and good balance.

Serve with Asian cuisine over the next 4-5 years.

It’s beautifully fruited and savory at the same time showing ripe cherry and floral characters, as well as game and spice complexity on the nose. The palate is smooth and nicely rounded, finishing gently dry. A satisfying Pinot with a lovely supple, silky mouthfeel.

At its best now to 2014. ««««  Stars
